Distance Learning: Week of March 16-20

Monday, March 16

READING: Achieve Article: No More Chocolate Milk? Do the 5-step activity…except for one change:  the thought question asks about acids and we haven’t learned about them yet.  Instead write your thought question response about this:  Do you think chocolate milk should be banned or not?  Write a paragraph explaining your opinion and include at least 2 details from the article.  (45 minutes)

MATH: Watch my first ever math lesson video (It was sooo weird and lonely taping a math lesson without you guys with me; I pretended you were there and kept trying to think of questions you might have!)

Here’s the Link to part 1: https://vimeo.com/398025537

Click here for the exciting conclusion to today’s math lesson:  https://vimeo.com/398037130/7ee9aef32d

Then complete pages 493 problems 1-7 and page 494 problems 9-11. Tomorrow I’ll post the answers so you can check your work.  (45 minutes)

SPELLING CITY: This week’s list is called Week of March 16.  We’ll be working on math words and vocabulary from Maniac Magee, our new book.  Today’s spelling assignment is to log-in to spellingcity.com and find your words.  Then copy each of the words 2 times in cursive (of courseJ) in the reading section of your spiral notebook.  (20 minutes)

SOCIAL STUDIES: Let’s get started with the Brave New World Culture Project! I do have a change to make in the directions.  See where it says you will only have to choose 3 topics to write about?  Well…since we are now going to be learning from home until the end of April, we’ll have time to do even more!  Our updated assignment is to do all 10 topics between now and when we get back.

Today is time to think about what kind of culture you would like to create.  Decide on your Culture’s Name, Location and Inhabitants.  Then select your first topic and get started!   (60 minutes)

RELIGION:  Today’s assignment is to remember that practicing social distancing is the best service you can give to our community.  Your act of kindness in staying home is helping keep others safe and healthy!

Tuesday, March 17 – Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

READING: I’m so excited to get started with this great book! I’ll be assigning reading a packet time every other day and am exploring options for us to have online lit groups next week to talk about it.

For today, read chapter 1 of Maniac Magee and do the Reader Response Questions: Chapter 1-Part 1 on pages 12 and 13 of your packet.  (1 hour)

Note: We’ll get back to the Character Analysis and Word Work another time.

MATH: Click here to check yesterday’s homework: Answers to pages 493-494.  Then re-watch the video(s) if you need to, then complete pages 495-496. (40 minutes)

SPELLING CITY: Start on the assignments I posted.  On Friday, I will check that these have been completed and log the work in to Powerschool, along with your vocab and spelling scores. (15 minutes)

SPANISH: Visit Senora Blanca’s teacher page and do the assignment for Monday…I did not know she had an assignment for you so we will just do her assignments one day later this week https://spanish.st-johnschool.org/5th-grade-classes/

SOCIAL STUDIES: Pick up where you left off on the Brave New World project and spend another 30 minutes on it today. Remember, we are now doing all the categories.  (30 minutes)

Nuala asked an excellent question…she asked about whether this should be draft or final copy quality work.  Please do a draft first, then make your edits/changes/improvements and turn in a final copy quality project when you get back.

WRITING: Today you will read about St. Patrick’s Day and write a 6-7 sentence paragraph summarizing the reading.  The reading and writing assignments are posted in Google Classroom.  Log in to classroom.google.com the same way you did to the other day to get started.  (30-40 minutes)

ART: Draw a leprechaun! Head over to this video and draw and color your own leprechaun.  Take a picture of your drawing and send it to kkelley@st-johnschool.org when you are finished! Here’s the link to the video: https://youtube/uKBvY5Gx6S8  (20 minutes)

RELIGION:  Today’s assignment is to remember that practicing social distancing is the best service you can give to our community.  Your act of kindness in staying home is helping keep others safe and healthy!
